Im not so sure ... I bought a N series handset and I am utterly disappointed ... The music quality is no where as good as an Ipod ... not to mention the hideous looks of the N series as compared to the sheer brilliance of the apple design ... and worst of all , these N series phones dont have the hallmark Nokia sturdiness and ease of use ... Heck I cant still figure out how to add a phone number from the memory into a SMS text ...

It is true that iRiver and Creative have become a great names in the space of MP3 players. But iPod was the trend-setter. I personally have iRiver H-320 and I find N 91's sound quality better than iRiver's. Just wanted to say that N91 has the quality of top-of-the-line MP3 players.

@Ramki, can't find the link now. But, well, you could do the test yourself. I've listened to both, and I can definitely stand for the statement.

Its indeed a good news that there is lot of competition among major players. This might help consumers as ther might be lot of price reduction.

I think Nokia has an edge over Apple as it has solid customer base and has a logistics support... secondly the production cost of nokia will be less, and profits it makes will be big since Nokia has its plants in India and China... its indeed an innovative company.. the user interface of Nokia is still the best in mobile phones.

I have been using a Nokia phone for 4 years which has never given me any problem... I vote for nokia... When it comes to music, I still prefer Creative to Apple.

@Manu, Can you please provide the source? Every player might have its own pros and cons, but you are saying something against the USP of the player.
Anyway, a proprietary decoder might work really well if you have your software perfectly tuned for it. I don't think Apple would compromise on quality like this. They might compromise on price though. :)

Hmm, not sure if you know this fact. The iPod has the worst sound quality when you benchmark it against the Creative, Iriver and other mp3 players.
Most mp3 players use the TI sound chip in them. The iPod uses its proprietary mp3 decoder.
So, a bench mark of Nokia's sound quality against the iPod wouldn't mean anything.

I think this is a knee-jerk reaction from Apple. Nokia's intentions of replacing the digicams and mp3 players were very clear quite long ago. Instead of adding the phone capability to the ipod, I think apple should have thought of adding other features to its ipod. For example, a software that can split a music into tracks or that can display base notes (i.e C,D,E,F...) of the music played. I don't know, there might be several others than they can think of that can target people who are not just casual listeners, but have some more interest in music.
I think the N-series is prohibitively costly even now for the common man. Only people like Bharani can own one. :)
As an aside, what will be the response of the Sony's and Canon's to Nokia? Digiphones?
